See MONF.249 and 251. This area feels much less isolated. Noise pollution from Lambert Hollow across the river. There is a large timber cut East-Southeast of this community. South of this community is a ridge spur with a Picea rubens - Tsuga canadensis / Rhododendron maximum upland forest. There is an old jeep trail which cuts along the southwest edge of this community. Further out on the floodplain ca. 100m south if the obs point it opens up into more of a woodland with dense S1 Rhododendron similar to MONF.251 only less diverse. Here the organic layer is thicker and the Sphagnum fallax grows on hummocks with muck lows.;Dense canopied Spruce - Hemlock swamp forest with islands of Spruce - Hemlock upland. On the surface it resembles our classic forested swamp but it seems slightly on the drier side with a lot of Sphagnum fallax growing in the lows on a thin layer of organic then a hard packed sandy loam. This area feels lower than the last floodplain. More subject to river flooding (10yrs.). Much of the water input is rain and seepage. When water table is high the lows fill up with water allowing Sphagnum fallax to invade. Now late in the summer it is bone dry and the Sphagnum is dying back.
Representativeness
This community is similar to the thin band around the wetland MONF.249 and 251 are on. This is a medium-sized patch of a forested swamp. Taking up roughly 1/2 of the floodplain. Resembles MONF plot done along Yellow Creek floodplain in 2004 only this is d
